The Philippines has unveiled a new digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to live and work in the country for up to two years. The announcement, made by President Bongbong Marcos in late April, aims to enhance the country’s tourism and economy by attracting foreign nationals who are employed abroad but wish to work remotely while residing in the Philippines.
The visa program, which will be available to eligible non-immigrant foreign nationals, provides an initial one-year stay with an option to extend for an additional year. To qualify, applicants must meet several requirements. They must be at least 18 years old, use digital technology for remote work, prove they earn sufficient income from foreign sources, hold valid health insurance throughout their stay, and maintain a clean criminal record. Importantly, visa holders are prohibited from seeking employment within the Philippines and must not pose any security threats to the nation.
The Philippines offers an appealing environment for digital nomads, with over 7,600 islands, pristine beaches, bustling cities like Manila, and famous surf destinations such as Siargao. Tourism officials highlight the country’s exceptional natural beauty, rich culture, and the warm hospitality of the Filipino people, making it an attractive option for remote workers seeking both work and leisure.
Although the application process for the digital nomad visa has not yet opened, officials anticipate that it will become available in the coming months. This initiative places the Philippines alongside other popular destinations for digital nomads, such as Portugal, Georgia, and Thailand, which also offer specialized visa programs for remote workers.
