Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport holders are now eligible to enter Qatar without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, a policy that took effect immediately following its announcement.
The new arrangement was confirmed by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu during his visit to Doha, where he highlighted the significance of simplifying travel procedures and strengthening bilateral relations between Hong Kong and Qatar.
Previously, Hong Kong passport holders were required to obtain a free visa on arrival to enter Qatar, while Qatari citizens have long enjoyed visa-free access to Hong Kong for up to 30 days. The reciprocal visa-free arrangement is expected to enhance the convenience of travel and foster deeper connections between the two regions.
“This simplification of entry requirements will make travel more convenient than before, and also serve to strengthen ties between Hong Kong and Qatar,” Lee said.
During his visit, Chief Executive Lee outlined three core objectives: enhancing intergovernmental cooperation, exploring new areas of collaboration, and building new friendships. He met with several senior Qatari officials, including Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai.
The two sides discussed ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, especially in trade, investment, and tourism. According to reports, agreements were reached in multiple sectors, with both parties aiming to improve customs clearance efficiency and streamline trade links.
Lee also welcomed new measures expected to yield positive results for both economies. He noted that ongoing negotiations could soon extend Hong Kong’s investment protection and tax agreements to include most Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Qatar.
Additionally, Lee emphasized Hong Kong’s commitment to becoming more inclusive for Muslim residents and encouraged Qatari citizens to visit the city.
