Starting June 1, 2025, China will extend its visa-free policy to citizens of Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay for a trial period lasting until May 31, 2026. This move allows holders of ordinary passports from these countries to enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, cultural exchanges, or transit.
The policy has been warmly welcomed by nationals of these Latin American countries living in China, who look forward to reuniting with their families and friends. Industry experts anticipate a significant increase in inbound tourism from these nations, creating a dynamic and reciprocal travel pattern.
China’s visa-free expansion was announced at the recent China-CELAC Forum ministerial meeting in Beijing, reflecting the country’s commitment to high-standard opening-up and promoting more inclusive and resilient economic globalization.
Improved air connectivity, including new direct flights such as the Mexico City to Shenzhen route, has already brought Latin America and China closer together. Online travel data shows substantial growth in tourism orders from these countries, signaling strong potential for future travel surges.
Beyond tourism, the visa exemption is expected to facilitate smoother business operations and technical exchanges. Latin American entrepreneurs and professionals working in China view the policy as a positive step to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Trade relations between China and Latin America have doubled over the past decade, reaching over $518 billion in 2024. Chinese exports like electric vehicles and Latin American products such as Chilean cherries and Argentine beef have become increasingly popular.
Additional initiatives announced at the China-CELAC Forum include support for small-scale livelihood projects, vocational education cooperation, promotion of Chinese language education, and tourism dialogue.
The visa-free policy is seen as a major facilitator for cultural and educational exchange, benefiting students and language learners from both regions and bringing the two sides closer despite the geographic distance.
