The Realities of Studying Abroad: Lessons that Remain Relevant Today

Studying abroad is an experience that can shape your life in many ways. Reflecting on my own time overseas, I’ve come to realize that the lessons I learned decades ago are still just as pertinent today.

When I first set out to study abroad, I envisioned a straightforward experience — new friends, new classes, and a fresh start. While that’s certainly part of it, the real value of studying abroad comes from how you engage with the new country and its people.

The essence of studying abroad isn’t just about academics. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, engaging with the local culture, and broadening your worldview. It’s easy to fall into the trap of only associating with people from your home country, sticking to familiar foods, and avoiding deeper cultural immersion. While this may feel comfortable, it’s a missed opportunity to truly experience the country you’re living in.

One of the most enriching aspects of my time abroad was discovering the shared human experiences that connect us all. Regardless of where we come from, we all share similar hopes, fears, and dreams. These universal emotions are the true bridge between cultures.

Rather than just experiencing a foreign land as a tourist, the key is to immerse yourself in the culture. This means learning the language, interacting with locals, and exploring beyond the typical tourist spots. I personally found that working part-time jobs during my time in the UK provided invaluable opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and gain insights into their values, struggles, and aspirations.

While academics played an important role in my experience, it was the personal growth outside the classroom that had the most lasting impact. The exposure to different teaching styles, independent learning, and critical thinking shaped my approach to work and learning even today.

The key takeaway from studying abroad is that true growth happens when you embrace the local culture and engage with the people around you. Don’t just live in the country — live with the country. When you do, you’ll come to realize that, despite our differences, we all seek similar things: love, happiness, and fulfillment.

For those considering studying abroad, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Embrace the challenges, explore the unknown, and build meaningful connections. You’ll return home with a broader perspective, a deeper understanding of yourself, and lasting memories that will shape your future.
