Studying in Portugal: A 2025 Guide for International Students

Portugal is emerging as a favored destination for international students, offering an affordable yet culturally rich university experience. From bustling plazas and affordable local cafés to historic campuses and welcoming communities, Portugal provides a unique blend of tradition and student life that appeals to young learners worldwide.

Why Portugal Appeals to International Students

Portugal’s appeal lies in its inclusive academic environment and affordable living costs, which are significantly lower than in many Western European countries. Universities here offer a wide range of Erasmus programs, international student organizations, and language support, making it easier for students from around the world to adapt.

The academic culture encourages open discussion with approachable professors and smaller class sizes than those typically found in larger European cities. Tuition fees are competitive, often considerably less than fees in countries like the UK or the Netherlands. While day-to-day expenses may be somewhat higher than anticipated, the overall affordability allows students to enjoy local experiences, from traveling around the country to savoring traditional Portuguese pastries.

Costs of Studying and Living in Portugal

Tuition fees for public universities are generally lower than most Western European institutions. For EU students, undergraduate and master’s programs typically cost between €700 and €1,500 per year. Non-EU students can expect fees ranging from €3,500 to €5,000 annually, still offering good value compared to fees in the US or UK. Private universities tend to charge higher fees but remain affordable in the European context.

Monthly living expenses, including rent, food, and transport, typically range from €700 to €1,000, depending on lifestyle and location. Affordable dining options and student discounts help keep costs manageable. Many international students also engage in part-time work to supplement their income.

Leading Universities for International Students

Portugal hosts several prestigious universities recognized for research and vibrant campus life. The University of Lisbon, University of Porto, University of Minho, and University of Coimbra stand out for their academic excellence and international student support.

These institutions offer orientation programs, language courses, and a growing number of English-taught degrees across disciplines such as economics, law, engineering, and the arts. Notably, the University of Coimbra is renowned for its historic campus, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its longstanding academic traditions.

Student Cities: Diverse Experiences Across Portugal

Lisbon: As the nation’s capital, Lisbon attracts students seeking an active and multicultural atmosphere. Universities like the University of Lisbon and Nova University Lisbon offer a wide selection of English-language programs, particularly in business, engineering, and international relations. The city is also a hub for internships in tech and media.

Porto: Known for its creative energy, Porto appeals to students interested in design, architecture, and the arts. The University of Porto offers strong programs in sciences and engineering, complemented by a lively cultural scene featuring exhibitions, music festivals, and local markets.

Coimbra: This historic city offers a quintessential student experience with close-knit communities and rich traditions such as the “Queima das Fitas” festival. Academic strengths include law, medicine, and sciences, all set within a compact cityscape conducive to walking and socializing.

Braga, Aveiro, Faro: Smaller cities like Braga and Aveiro provide a more relaxed pace of life, with thriving tech sectors and vibrant coastal culture respectively. Faro, the Algarve’s main city, combines outdoor leisure with specialized marine science programs.

Language and Learning: Portuguese and English Programs

While Portuguese is the national language, many universities have expanded their English-taught programs to accommodate international students. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, business, and social sciences are increasingly available in English, especially in major cities.

Language centers at universities offer Portuguese courses to help students integrate socially and professionally, though English is widely used on campuses and in city centers.

Housing and Accommodation

Student accommodation options range from university dormitories to shared apartments and private rentals. While dorm spaces fill quickly, many students find affordable shared housing. Rent prices vary by city but typically range from €300 to €500 per month, often inclusive of utilities.

Application Process and Scholarships

Applicants must prepare academic transcripts, identification, and proof of English proficiency for English-taught programs. Deadlines vary by university and residency status, so early planning is essential. Accepted students will then apply for student visas or residence permits.

Portugal offers numerous scholarships for EU and non-EU students, including merit-based and government-funded awards. Some scholarships do not require IELTS scores, benefiting applicants from countries such as Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Student Visa Requirements

Non-EU students require a Portuguese student visa for stays longer than three months. Application requires admission proof, passport, health insurance, accommodation evidence, and financial support documentation. Upon arrival, students must apply for a residence permit through the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service.
