Tips for Handling Culture Shock When Studying Abroad

Embarking on an overseas education journey is both exciting and challenging. For many international students, adapting to a new culture, environment, and academic system can be overwhelming. Arav Tewari, an international student currently enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York City, shares his firsthand experience of navigating these challenges and offers practical advice for others preparing to study abroad.

In the video, Arav reflects on the emotional hurdles he faced, including the intense homesickness that often accompanies leaving one’s home country. He describes the initial culture shock upon arrival—adjusting to the fast-paced lifestyle of New York, understanding new social norms, and coping with different communication styles. According to Arav, recognizing these feelings as a natural part of the adaptation process helped him to gradually settle in and embrace his new surroundings.

A major focus of Arav’s story is how he adapted to the distinct academic environment at Parsons. Unlike the education system in his home country, he encountered new teaching methods that emphasized creativity, critical thinking, and independent projects. Arav shares strategies that helped him find balance, such as developing a personal routine, seeking support from fellow students and faculty, and actively engaging in campus activities. These steps not only improved his academic performance but also enriched his social life, helping him build a support network far from home.

The guidance and mentorship from Dr. Amrita Dass, founder and dean of the Career Research Institute, played a significant role in Arav’s successful transition. Dr. Dass helped him set realistic goals and provided professional insights into managing cultural and academic differences. This mentorship underscores the importance of having access to experienced advisors who understand the complexities international students face.

For students who dream of studying abroad, Arav’s experience offers valuable lessons. He encourages prospective international students to prepare mentally for the inevitable challenges, stay open-minded, and take proactive steps to build connections within their new communities. His advice highlights that while culture shock can be difficult, it also presents an opportunity for personal growth and global understanding.

This video is a must-watch for anyone considering international education. It not only helps future students set realistic expectations but also inspires them to view cultural adjustment as a rewarding journey rather than a barrier.
