How To Apply For Excelsior Scholarship

1. Introduction to Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, funded by the European Union, is a renowned international education program. It aims to foster academic cooperation and mobility between Europe and the world. This scholarship allows students to study across multiple European countries, experience diverse cultures, and be taught by top – tier faculty in various academic fields, covering everything from humanities to STEM disciplines.

2. Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirements

Degree Level: Most Erasmus Mundus scholarships target master’s degree students. For these, a relevant bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution is typically required. For example, if applying for an environmental science master’s program, a related bachelor’s in biology or chemistry is preferred.

Grades: A good academic record is crucial. While there’s no universal GPA minimum, successful applicants usually have at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent high – level performance in previous studies.

Mobility Requirements

Residence: To be eligible, you must not have resided or mainly studied/worked in Erasmus Mundus program countries for over 12 months in the 5 years before the scholarship start. This rule promotes new cross – border experiences.

Citizenship: Some scholarships are open globally, while others are for specific regions like Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Check the citizenship requirements of your desired program.

3. Researching Erasmus Mundus Programs

Program Selection

Online Platforms: The official Erasmus Mundus website is the main source for finding available programs. It has a comprehensive database, and you can search by subject, country, or language of instruction. For example, if interested in an English – taught business program, use the website’s search filters.

University Websites: Visiting individual university websites is also beneficial. They often provide more detailed curriculum, faculty, and program – specific information. A Dutch university might highlight its unique research facilities for Erasmus Mundus students in a certain field.

Program Fit

Course Content: Review the course content carefully. Ensure it aligns with your academic and career goals. If you aim for a renewable energy career, look for programs with relevant courses like solar and wind energy technology.

Partnerships: Many programs are run in partnership with multiple universities. This offers the chance to study in different academic environments and gain a broader perspective.

4. Application Process

Application Deadlines

Each program has its own application deadline, which can vary greatly. Mark the relevant dates on your calendar as soon as you start considering applying. Some programs have early deadlines as early as September or October of the previous year for a September – start program, while others may be as late as January or February. Missing the deadline means no consideration for the scholarship.

Application Materials

Transcripts: Provide official transcripts from all previous educational institutions. They should show courses, grades, and degrees. Translate them into English or the program’s language if needed.

Letters of Recommendation: Usually, submit two or three letters from professors, supervisors, or employers who can attest to your academic abilities and potential.

Statement of Purpose: Explain your reasons for applying, academic and career goals, and how the program will help you achieve them. Be specific and show enthusiasm.

CV/Resume: Highlight your educational background, work experience (if any), internships, and relevant skills or achievements.

4.3 Submission

Most applications are submitted online through the program or university’s application portals. Follow the instructions carefully, upload all required documents in the correct format and size, and fill out additional forms if needed.

5. Selection Process

Evaluation Criteria

Academic Merit: Your academic record and the relevance of your previous studies are major factors.

Motivation and Fit: Your statement of purpose and letters of recommendation show your motivation and fit for the program.

Language Proficiency: Demonstrate sufficient language proficiency, usually through tests like IELTS or TOEFL for English – taught programs.

Notification

Once the selection is complete, you’ll be notified. The timing varies by program but usually takes a few months after the deadline. If selected, you’ll receive an offer letter with details about the scholarship. Some programs may provide feedback if you’re not selected.

6. Pre – Departure Preparations

Visa and Residence Permits

Visa Application: Non – European students need to apply for a student visa. Provide documents like the acceptance letter, proof of financial means, and a valid passport.
Residence Permits: You may also need to apply for a residence permit after arriving in the host country. Research and follow the local procedures.

Accommodation

University – Provided Accommodation: Many universities offer accommodation for international students. Apply early as spaces may be limited.

Private Accommodation: If university – provided accommodation isn’t suitable, use platforms like Airbnb or local real estate agencies. But be cautious with private landlords.

Cultural Adaptation

Learn About the Culture: Before departure, learn about the cultures of the host countries, including social norms and customs.

Language Learning: Even if the program is in English, learn some basic local language phrases to enhance communication and show respect.

7. During the Scholarship Period

Academic Responsibilities

Coursework: Complete the coursework as required, including attending lectures, seminars, and practical sessions. Stay organized and follow the study schedule.

Exams and Assignments: Prepare well in advance for exams and assignments, which may include written exams, oral presentations, and research projects.

Mobility within the Program

Study in Different Countries: Plan your mobility carefully. Understand the credit transfer policies and any additional application procedures for transferring between universities in the program.

Cultural Exchange: Take advantage of cultural exchange opportunities. Interact with students from different countries and participate in cultural events.

Financial Management

Scholarship Disbursement: Keep track of the disbursement schedule and ensure you receive the funds as expected.

Budgeting: Create a budget for living expenses as the scholarship may not cover everything.

8. Post – Scholarship Opportunities

Career Prospects

International Network: Leverage the international network of alumni, professors, and fellow students for job opportunities.

Enhanced Employability: The Erasmus Mundus experience can make you more competitive in the job market, especially for positions requiring international perspective.

Further Studies

The Erasmus Mundus master’s program can be a great stepping – stone for doctoral studies, either in Europe or elsewhere. Some universities offer preferential admission for alumni.

In conclusion, applying for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship demands careful planning. By understanding the requirements and following the application process, you can increase your chances of getting this prestigious scholarship and having a rewarding international educational experience.
