Study Abroad Learners Share Transformative Experiences

Study Abroad Learners Share Transformative Experiences

As students embark on study abroad programs, many report profound changes in their perspectives. Grayson Russell, a junior at Appalachian State University (App State), captures this sentiment in his journal. His entries, though brief, are filled with reflections from a transformative two-week trip to Brazil that shifted his long-standing “what’s next mindset” into one focused on experience and growth.

A Life-Altering Journey

“It was definitely the best two weeks of my life—pure happiness, learning, and experiencing new things,” Russell recalls. His journal, consisting of six typed pages, encapsulates the richness of his encounters in Brazil. Each page serves as a testament to the personal growth he achieved during the trip, highlighting the significance of immersive learning experiences.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

This summer, App State students participated in faculty-led programs across five continents, coinciding with this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme: “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Students who traveled to South America and Spain witnessed firsthand the contributions of Hispanic and Latino leaders in various fields, enriching their understanding of cultural dynamics and historical impacts.

Insights from the Trip Leader

Marty Meznar, the associate dean for global and civic engagement at the Walker College of Business, led the Brazilian trip. Having been at App State for 17 years, he has facilitated numerous study abroad programs. Born in Brazil, Meznar finds great joy in introducing students to his homeland.

“It broadens their horizons in a way that you can’t achieve without going,” Meznar explained. He emphasized the excitement of guiding students who have never traveled outside the U.S., noting how mind-expanding such experiences can be for them.

Academic Exploration in a Global Context

Before and after their travels, students typically meet on campus to discuss course materials relevant to their experiences abroad. Meznar’s focus for this trip was energy, ecology, and the environment. Will Byrd, a graduate student in business administration, participated in this course. He noted the stark differences in studying these topics in Brazil compared to a classroom setting in Boone.

“The way they generated power was in tune with nature, which reflects the overall vibe in Brazil,” Byrd observed. The Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam, located on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay, serves as a key example of this approach, supplying power to all of Paraguay.

Across the Atlantic, junior Ella Marion explored the advertising and public relations sectors of the Spanish wine industry. She echoed Byrd’s sentiments, stating that her immersion in Spanish culture provided a deeper understanding of her course objectives.

“You’re there in Spain drinking Spanish wine. You can’t replicate that experience in a classroom, even in a wine-tasting class,” Marion remarked.

During their stay in Barcelona, Marion and her classmates visited Codorníu, a vineyard with over 400 years of history, and Mas Geli Pals, a newer winery. These excursions allowed them to analyze the evolving advertising and public relations strategies within the industry.

Collaborative Learning in Costa Rica

Rick Rheingans, a professor in the Department of Sustainable Development, designed his faculty-led program in Costa Rica around established partnerships with local organizations focused on conservation and sustainability. He emphasized the value of students interacting with young Costa Rican conservation professionals.

“Students gain unique insights from these collaborations, enhancing their overall experience,” Rheingans explained. While ensuring course objectives are met, he also recognizes the importance of allowing students to enjoy local attractions.

Meznar highlighted his fondness for visiting Paraty, a coastal town known for its historical significance in the importation of enslaved people. Such experiences enrich students’ understanding of cultural contexts while blending academic pursuits with leisure activities.

Personal Growth Through Cultural Immersion

For Russell, one standout moment occurred during a beach visit in Rio de Janeiro. He mustered the courage to wear a speedo and engage in volleyball with locals, marking a significant step outside his comfort zone. His journal captures a range of experiences, from exhilarating activities to sobering realizations about the challenges faced by Brazilian communities.

The pages reflect a character arc as Russell transitions from a focus on completion to a desire for deeper learning. “I now look forward to working and the paycheck that comes with it, not just to finish school, but to learn about different ways of life,” he wrote.

The Lasting Impact of Study Abroad

As students like Russell, Byrd, and Marion return from their travels, they carry with them not only academic insights but also transformative life experiences. The immersion in new cultures fosters a deeper appreciation for global perspectives, inspiring a shift from a narrow focus on academic completion to a broader outlook on life and learning.

The faculty-led programs at App State exemplify how study abroad opportunities can redefine students’ educational journeys. By engaging directly with local communities and industries, students gain invaluable insights that extend far beyond the classroom.

In a world increasingly interconnected, such experiences are vital for cultivating global citizens equipped to navigate complex cultural landscapes. As Meznar and other faculty members continue to lead these transformative journeys, they contribute significantly to shaping the next generation of leaders ready to embrace change and innovation.

Conclusion

The stories from Grayson Russell and his peers underscore the profound impact of study abroad programs on personal and academic development. These journeys not only enhance students’ educational experiences but also instill a sense of curiosity and openness that lasts a lifetime.

As App State students embark on future adventures, they will undoubtedly continue to embrace the lessons learned from their travels, fostering a lifelong commitment to learning and cultural appreciation. The essence of study abroad lies in its ability to broaden horizons and inspire a future where understanding and collaboration transcend borders.
