Hilde Hoogenboom, an associate professor of Russian, notes the program’s adaptation to changing global dynamics, including study abroad opportunities in countries formerly part of the Soviet Union.
These language programs are complemented by vibrant student clubs, such as the Portuguese Club and Russian Student Association, fostering cultural immersion and linguistic practice outside the classroom.
Students like Grae Shoup, a freshman studying Spanish linguistics, are drawn to ASU’s language programs out of a fascination with languages and a desire to connect with others. ASU’s Chinese Flagship Program, sponsored by the Department of Defense, offers an intensive pathway to proficiency in Chinese, culminating in study opportunities abroad.
The interdisciplinary nature of language studies at ASU prepares students for a range of careers and experiences, from international business to diplomacy. Shoup considers double majoring in Spanish linguistics and Chinese to deepen her language skills and broaden her cultural understanding.
