Dual study programs have become increasingly popular in Germany as a means of combining theoretical learning with practical experience in the workplace. In this article, we will explore what dual study is, its benefits, how it works, and some examples of successful dual study programs in Germany.

What is Dual Study in Germany?

Dual study is a combination of academic study at a university or college and on-the-job training in a company or organization. This allows students to gain practical experience in their field of study while also obtaining a degree. Dual study programs typically last three to four years, during which students alternate between attending classes at a higher education institution and working in a company. The concept originated in Germany in the 19th century as a way to address the shortage of skilled workers and has since become a cornerstone of the German education system.

Benefits of Dual Study Dual

study programs offer numerous benefits for both students and companies. For students, it provides the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while studying, which can give them a competitive edge when applying for jobs after graduation. It also allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, enhancing their understanding of the subject matter. Students who participate in dual study programs are also more likely to be employed upon completion of their degree due to the practical skills and experience they have gained.

For companies, dual study programs provide access to highly motivated and trained employees who are familiar with the company’s operations and culture. Companies can train students according to their specific needs and requirements, which can result in a better fit between employee and employer. Additionally, participating in dual study programs can help companies build relationships with higher education institutions and attract talented students to their organization.

How Dual Study Works

Dual study programs typically follow a structured schedule, where students spend part of their time attending lectures, seminars, and exams at a higher education institution, and the other part working in a company. The specific breakdown of the program can vary depending on the institution and company, but generally, students spend three to six months in each setting before switching. During the practical phase, students work under the guidance of experienced professionals and receive a salary from the company. Additionally, dual study programs often have an integrated approach where coursework is designed to complement the practical experience.

To be eligible for a dual study program, students must typically meet the admission requirements of both the higher education institution and the company they will be working with. This can include a high school diploma, proficiency in the German language, and relevant skills or experience.
