How to get PR after Masters in Australia

Australia has become a popular destination for international students who seek to pursue higher education and also settle down permanently. Many graduates from countries all over the world come to Australia to complete their Masters and discover the wealth of opportunities that await them. One of the most sought-after benefits of studying in Australia is the possibility of obtaining permanent residency (PR) after completing your course. This guide will provide you with an overview of how to obtain PR in Australia after completing your Master’s degree.

Choose the right course and university

The first step towards obtaining PR in Australia after completing your Master’s degree is to choose the right course and university. Opting for a course that is in demand in Australia and aligns with the country’s skill shortages will increase your chances of obtaining PR. You should also choose a university that is recognized by the Australian government and has a good reputation for producing high-quality graduates.

Obtain a student visa

Before you can begin your studies in Australia, you must obtain a student visa. The student visa not only permits you to enter Australia but also allows you to work part-time while you study. To apply for a student visa, you must meet the eligibility requirements and provide evidence of your financial capacity to support your studies and living expenses.

Complete your Master’s degree and maintain a good academic record

After enrolling in your chosen course, it is crucial to complete your Master’s degree successfully and maintain a good academic record. A high GPA will demonstrate to prospective employers and immigration authorities that you possess the necessary skills and knowledge required to work in Australia.

Gain work experience in your field

After graduating from your Master’s program, gaining relevant work experience in your field of study will increase your chances of obtaining PR. The Australian Department of Home Affairs offers various skilled migration programs, and having work experience in your field will make you eligible for these programs.

Apply for skilled migration programs

The Australian government offers various skilled migration programs that allow international graduates to apply for PR in Australia. The most popular and well-known program is the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, which has three streams: Skilled Independent, Skilled Nominated, and Skilled Regional. The GSM program is points-based, and you must score a minimum number of points to be eligible for PR.

Stay up to date with changes in immigration policies

After completing your Master’s degree and applying for PR, it is essential to stay up-to-date with any changes in immigration policies. The Australian government regularly reviews its immigration policies, and changes may affect your eligibility for PR. Therefore, make sure you keep yourself informed about the latest updates and changes in the immigration policies.

Can I stay in Australia after my masters?

Yes, you can stay in Australia after completing your Master’s degree. However, the duration of your stay will depend on the type of visa you hold and your individual circumstances.

If you are an international student with a valid student visa, you may be able to apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) after completing your studies in Australia. This visa allows you to remain in Australia for an additional period of up to two years to gain work experience related to your field of study.

The Temporary Graduate visa has two streams: the Graduate Work stream and the Post-Study Work stream. The Graduate Work stream is for graduates who have qualifications and skills relevant to specific occupations in demand in Australia. The Post-Study Work stream is for graduates who have completed a Bachelor’s, Masters, or Doctoral degree from an Australian education institution, regardless of their field of study.

It’s important to note that eligibility criteria and requirements for the Temporary Graduate visa may change over time, so it’s recommended to check the Australian government’s Department of Home Affairs website for the most up-to-date information.

In conclusion,

obtaining permanent residency in Australia after completing your Master’s degree requires careful planning, hard work, and perseverance. By following the steps outlined above, you can increase your chances of obtaining PR in Australia and building a successful career in your field of study. Remember to choose the right course and university, maintain a good academic record, gain relevant work experience, apply for skilled migration programs, and stay up-to-date with changes in immigration policies.
