How to Apply for a Lost Permanent Resident Card in Canada

by xulidan

in Immigration Guide

Permanent residents of Canada are required to carry a valid permanent resident card at all times as proof of their status. If you lose your permanent resident card, it is important to apply for a replacement as soon as possible. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to apply for a lost permanent resident card in Canada.

Reporting the Lost Card

The first step to take when you lose your permanent resident card is to report it immediately to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You can do this by calling the IRCC Call Centre or reporting it online on the IRCC website. By reporting your lost card, you will help prevent fraudulent use of your identity and protect yourself from potential criminal activities.

Gather Required Documents

Once you have reported your lost card, you will need to gather the necessary documents to apply for a replacement. These include:

  • A completed application form for a new permanent resident card
  • Two recent passport-size photos with your name and date of birth written on the back
  • Proof of your Canadian residency status, such as a copy of your passport or driver’s license
  • Any additional supporting documents requested by IRCC

It is important to ensure that all documents are up-to-date and complete before submitting your application.

Submit Your Application

You can submit your application for a lost permanent resident card in two ways: online or by mail. To apply online, you will need to create an account on the IRCC website and follow the instructions to upload your application and supporting documents.

If you choose to apply by mail, you will need to print out the application form and mail it along with your supporting documents to the address provided on the form. Make sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your new permanent resident card.

Wait for Processing

After submitting your application, you will need to wait for processing by IRCC. The processing time for a lost permanent resident card can vary depending on individual circumstances and the volume of applications received by IRCC.

You can check the status of your application online using the unique client identifier (UCI) number provided in your application confirmation email. Once your application is approved, IRCC will mail your new permanent resident card to the address you provided in your application.

Is Canada easy to immigrate to?

Canada has a well-established immigration system, with several programs designed to welcome immigrants from around the world. While it’s not necessarily “easy” to immigrate to Canada, the process can be straightforward for those who meet the criteria for one of the available immigration programs.

The Canadian government offers various pathways for permanent residency, including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), Family Sponsorship, and Business Immigration. Each program has its own specific requirements, but they all generally assess applicants based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and adaptability.

It’s important to note that the immigration process can be competitive, and meeting the basic eligibility requirements may not guarantee approval. However, for those who are determined, have a strong case, and meet the criteria, immigrating to Canada can be a viable option.

In conclusion,

losing your permanent resident card can be stressful, but it is important to report it immediately and apply for a replacement as soon as possible. By following these steps and ensuring that you gather all required documents, you can get a new permanent resident card and continue to enjoy the benefits of being a permanent resident of Canada.
