Can EU Citizens Still Move to the UK?

by xulidan

Since the Brexit referendum in 2016, there has been a lot of confusion and uncertainty about whether EU citizens can still move to the UK. The answer is yes, but there are some changes that have occurred as a result of Brexit.

In this article, we will explore the current situation for EU citizens who wish to move to the UK, including the new rules and requirements they must follow.

Introduction: Understanding the Impact of Brexit

Brexit, which officially took effect on January 1st, 2021, resulted in several changes to the way the UK handles immigration. One of the most significant changes was the end of free movement between the UK and EU countries.

Prior to Brexit, EU citizens were able to move freely within the EU, including to the UK, without needing to obtain a visa or other permission. However, with the end of free movement, EU citizens now require a visa to live and work in the UK.

Applying for a Visa to Move to the UK

EU citizens who wish to move to the UK must apply for a visa under the new points-based system. This system applies to all non-UK citizens, including those from EU countries.

To be eligible for a visa, applicants must meet certain criteria and score a minimum number of points. Points are awarded based on factors such as age, English language proficiency, level of education, and job offer.

There are several different types of visas available depending on the individual’s circumstances. For example, a skilled worker visa is available for those who have a job offer in the UK and meet certain qualifications. A student visa is available for those who wish to study in the UK.

Settled Status for EU Citizens Already Living in the UK

EU citizens who were living in the UK prior to December 31st, 2020, are able to apply for settled status. Settled status allows EU citizens to continue living and working in the UK, even after Brexit.

To be eligible for settled status, individuals must have lived in the UK continuously for at least five years. Those who have lived in the UK for less than five years may be eligible for pre-settled status, which allows them to stay in the UK until they have reached the five-year mark.

Applications for settled status can be made online and must be submitted before June 30th, 2021.

Impact of COVID-19 on Moving to the UK

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on immigration to the UK. Travel restrictions and lockdowns have made it more difficult for people to move to the UK, and many visa processing centers have experienced delays and backlogs.

However, the UK government has implemented some measures to ease the process for EU citizens. For example, those with a job offer in the UK are now able to apply for a visa without having to leave their home country first.

Conclusion: Moving to the UK as an EU Citizen

In conclusion, while Brexit has resulted in some changes to the way EU citizens can move to the UK, it is still possible for them to do so. The new points-based system may require some additional steps and documentation, but it is designed to ensure that only those who meet certain criteria are able to live and work in the UK.

EU citizens who were already living in the UK prior to Brexit are also able to apply for settled status, which allows them to remain in the UK indefinitely.

If you are an EU citizen considering a move to the UK, it is important to research the requirements and application process for the specific visa you are interested in. Immigration laws and policies can change quickly, so be sure to stay up-to-date on any updates or changes that may affect your situation.
