Macau has launched a new iris recognition system to speed up immigration clearance for Hong Kong permanent residents traveling to the city, starting this week.
Authorities in the gaming and tourism hub announced on Monday that the iris scan option is now available to Hong Kong permanent residents who have registered for Macau’s automated passenger clearance (APC) service. Eligible travelers will be able to use this biometric system from noon on Wednesday.
The move is part of Macau’s ongoing efforts to modernize border control and facilitate faster, smoother immigration processing for frequent travelers. A total of 81 iris recognition lanes have been installed across six key Macau border checkpoints, including the Border Gate, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Macau International Airport, Taipa Ferry Terminal, Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, and Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal.
Out of these lanes, 71 are equipped with advanced second-generation iris recognition technology. This upgraded system features enhanced face-tracking capabilities, larger display screens for clearer instructions, and improved voice guidance to assist travelers through the process.
Hong Kong permanent residents aged 18 or older can register their iris biometrics at any lane equipped with the registration function during their first use. The registration process is quick, taking approximately 25 seconds to complete.
This iris recognition service complements existing automated clearance options, helping to reduce queues and wait times at Macau’s busy border crossings. Macau’s Immigration Department said the system aims to provide a more secure and convenient travel experience, leveraging biometric technology to streamline immigration checks.
As cross-border travel continues to recover and increase following recent global disruptions, Macau’s adoption of biometric immigration clearance underscores the city’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into public services. The expanded eligibility to Hong Kong permanent residents reflects the strong travel and economic ties between the two Special Administrative Regions.
Travelers are encouraged to register their iris data early to take full advantage of the new system. Macau authorities also continue to emphasize the importance of following all health and safety protocols at border checkpoints.
