The University of Birmingham and the University of Glasgow, both members of the prestigious Russell Group, have announced a joint initiative aimed at strengthening career support for Indian and international students. The collaboration includes the creation of a new India-based graduate careers role, providing tailored assistance before and after graduation.
The newly established position, based in India, will engage directly with Indian employers, alumni networks, and industry advisory boards. Its purpose is to support returning graduates through pre-arrival briefings, skills development programs, and long-term career planning.
“International students are an integral part of our academic community, and we are committed to helping them unlock global career opportunities,” said Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. “This partnership with the University of Glasgow offers our graduates unique support and a competitive edge as they enter the job market.”
The initiative will extend support to students during their time in the UK as well. Both universities will enhance career services for international students by providing access to customised career counselling, alumni mentorship programs, and employer-led networking events. These services will be coordinated by specialised International Engagement Teams within each university’s career service department.
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, emphasised the long-term vision of the collaboration: “Our partnership with Birmingham reflects a shared commitment to international student success, both academically and professionally. This program underscores our goal to support graduates well beyond their time on campus and expand their opportunities in the global workforce.”
The career support initiative will be available from May 2025 and will serve both current students and alumni for up to five years post-graduation. It is part of a broader effort by UK institutions to improve employability outcomes and build stronger global alumni networks.
