Wake Tech Community College has unveiled its 2026 study abroad program, offering students unique academic travel experiences to London, Italy, and Iceland. These trips are designed to combine classroom learning with cultural immersion, providing valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Literary Exploration in London
During spring break from March 13 to 21, students enrolled in ENG-242: British Literature II will travel to London under the guidance of faculty member Gabrielle Volstad. The itinerary includes visits to the British Library, Westminster Abbey, and a performance of The Mousetrap in London’s West End. The trip aims to connect students directly with the historical and cultural context of the literature they study, spanning from the Romantic period to contemporary works.
Professor Volstad emphasizes that this immersive approach promotes active engagement with course material, enabling students to deepen their understanding by experiencing the settings and stories firsthand. She notes the trip helps students reflect on their roles in the world and the lasting impact of their actions.
Culinary and Cultural Immersion in Italy
In May, students taking CUL-287: Cultural Experience will embark on an 11-day journey through central Italy, including stops in Rome, Turin, and the Cinque Terre region. Led by Chef Aaron Stumb, the program offers hands-on culinary instruction alongside visits to renowned vineyards and food producers. The experience is designed to introduce students to the rich diversity of Italian cuisine beyond the Americanized versions many have known.
Chef Stumb highlights that this opportunity allows students to challenge preconceived notions by tasting authentic dishes and learning directly from local chefs. The trip serves as a comprehensive cultural education engaging students’ senses and broadening their appreciation of Italy’s culinary heritage.
Real-World Mathematics in Iceland
In June, students enrolled in MAT-143: Quantitative Literacy will participate in a nine-day climate change-focused program in Reykjavik, Iceland, led by instructor Brooke Ottlo. The course involves analyzing carbon emissions and temperature data and includes visits to geothermal power plants, sustainability centers, and natural landmarks such as Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park.
Professor Ottlo explains that the program encourages students to apply mathematical concepts to global challenges, moving beyond textbook problems to using data-driven inquiry to inspire positive environmental change.
Scholarships and Eligibility
The 2026 study abroad trips are open exclusively to students pursuing Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. The Wake Tech Foundation will offer scholarships to help offset travel costs, and students are encouraged to express their interest when applying.
Additionally, Wake Tech plans further international programs this summer, with students from music, art, and business disciplines traveling to London, Paris, and Japan.
Expanding Global Education at Wake Tech
Beyond study abroad, Wake Tech offers more than 70 courses incorporating international themes and practical global applications. Students who complete global vision courses, participate in international activities, engage in community projects, and submit a capstone project qualify for the college’s “Global Distinguished Scholars” recognition.
Last spring, Devin Kahart became the first recipient of this honor, exemplifying the college’s commitment to preparing students for success in an interconnected world.
Wake Tech’s 2026 study abroad program reflects the college’s dedication to broadening students’ horizons and fostering skills needed in today’s global society. Whether through travel or local global education initiatives, students are encouraged to develop the cultural awareness and critical thinking essential for their future careers.
