What Visa Do I Need To Move To Australia

Australia offers a diverse range of visa options for individuals who wish to stay in the country for one year. These visas cater to different purposes such as tourism, work, study, and family reunification. Understanding the cost associated with each one – year visa is crucial as it forms a significant part of the overall planning for your stay in Australia. In this article, we will explore in detail the various one – year visas available in Australia and their respective costs.

Visitor Visas (Subclass 600) – One – Year Option

Tourist Stream

The tourist stream of the Subclass 600 visa can sometimes be granted for up to one year. This visa is suitable for those who want to visit Australia for a holiday, visit friends or family, or engage in non – work – related activities. The application fee for this visa is relatively affordable, usually around $140. However, it’s important to note that the actual duration of the visa grant, whether it will be one year or less, depends on the discretion of the Australian Department of Home Affairs. When applying, you need to provide sufficient evidence of your ties to your home country, such as employment, property, or family, to convince the authorities that you will return after your visit. You also cannot work on this visa. If you violate this condition, you may face visa cancellation and deportation.

Business Visitor Stream

For individuals who need to visit Australia for business – related activities like attending meetings, conferences, or negotiating contracts, the business visitor stream of the Subclass 600 visa can also be issued for up to one year. The application fee is the same as the tourist stream, approximately $140. This visa allows you to conduct business activities, but you are not permitted to be employed by an Australian company or receive payment from an Australian source. You will need to present a detailed itinerary of your business activities in Australia, along with supporting documents such as letters of invitation from Australian business partners.

Work Visas – One – Year Options

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa – Short – Term Stream (Subclass 482)

The Short – Term stream of the TSS visa can be valid for up to two years, but it is common for some applicants to be granted a one – year visa initially. This visa is designed to fill temporary skill shortages in the Australian labor market. The application fees vary depending on the circumstances. For example, the base application fee can range from around 1,080 to 4,200. Additionally, there may be other costs involved. If you are applying through a Labor Agreement stream, the fees might be different. To be eligible, you need to have a job offer from an approved Australian employer in an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list. You also need to meet certain skill and experience requirements. For instance, if you are a chef, you should have relevant culinary qualifications and work experience. With this visa, you can work in Australia for the duration of the visa grant, but you need to abide by the conditions set by the employer and the Australian government.

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 and 462)

The Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 for certain countries and Subclass 462 for others) allows young people to work and travel in Australia for up to one year. The application fee for the Subclass 417 visa is 440, while for the Subclass 462 visa, it is 440 as well. To be eligible for the Subclass 417, you must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 for some countries), hold a valid passport from an eligible country, and meet health and character requirements. For the Subclass 462, the age limit is usually 18 – 30 years old, and you also need to meet similar health and character criteria. This visa offers a great opportunity to experience Australian life, work in various industries like hospitality, agriculture, or tourism, and earn some money while traveling. However, there are restrictions on the type of work you can do. For example, you can only work for the same employer for up to six months in most cases.

Student Visas – One – Year Options

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Courses

If you are planning to study a vocational education and training course in Australia for one year, you will need to apply for a Subclass 500 student visa. The application fee for this visa is $620. To be eligible, you must have a confirmed place in a registered VET course. These courses cover a wide range of fields such as automotive, hospitality, and childcare. While on a student visa, you are generally allowed to work part – time, usually up to 40 hours per fortnight during semester breaks and full – time during holidays. This can help you gain practical experience in your field of study and also earn some income to support your living expenses. However, you need to ensure that your work does not interfere with your studies. You also need to meet the course attendance requirements and maintain a satisfactory academic performance.

Short – Term Academic Courses

For some short – term academic courses that last one year, such as certain graduate certificates or diploma courses, you will also apply for the Subclass 500 student visa with the same $620 application fee. Similar to VET courses, you need to meet the requirements of the educational institution, provide evidence of financial support to cover your tuition fees and living expenses, and meet the English language proficiency requirements.

Family Visas – One – Year Options

Temporary Partner Visa (Subclass 820 for Onshore or Subclass 309 for Offshore)

The temporary partner visa (Subclass 820 for those already in Australia and Subclass 309 for offshore applicants) can be a one – year option in some cases. The application fee for this visa is quite high, around $7,715 for the main applicant.

This fee covers both the temporary and permanent visa components (although the permanent visa application is processed separately later). To be eligible, you must be in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. You need to provide extensive evidence of the authenticity of your relationship, such as joint bank accounts, shared accommodation details, and statements from friends and family. The temporary visa allows you to live and work in Australia while the permanent visa application is being processed. In some cases, the initial grant of the temporary visa can be for one year, after which it may be extended depending on the progress of the permanent visa application.

Conclusion

The cost of a one – year visa in Australia varies significantly depending on the type of visa you apply for. Visitor visas, such as the Subclass 600 in both tourist and business streams, have a relatively low application fee of around 140. Work visas like the TSS Short – Term stream can have fees ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, while Working Holiday Visas cost 440. Student visas for vocational or short – term academic courses have an application fee of 620. Family visas, especially the temporary partner visa, come with a much higher fee of approximately 7,715. When considering applying for a one – year visa in Australia, it’s not just about the cost. You also need to carefully assess your eligibility, the requirements of the visa, and the conditions you will need to abide by during your stay. It is advisable to seek advice from a registered migration agent or an immigration attorney to ensure that you make the right decision.

Remember, the right visa can open up a world of opportunities in Australia, whether it’s for a short – term work experience, a year of study, a family reunion, or an extended holiday. By understanding the costs and other aspects associated with these visas, you can better plan your journey to Australia and make the most of your one – year stay.
