Can Tourists Go to New Zealand?

New Zealand, with its breathtaking landscapes, unique Maori culture, and friendly atmosphere, has long been a top – tier destination on many travelers’ bucket lists. If you’ve been dreaming of visiting this island nation, you’re probably eager to know whether it’s possible to go there as a tourist right now. This article will provide you with a detailed introduction to help you make an informed decision.

Current Travel Restrictions and Entry Requirements

Visa – Free Entry and NZETA

As of now, tourists from many countries can enter New Zealand for up to 6 months without a traditional visa. However, you will need to obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZETA) before your trip. This is an important step in the entry process. The NZETA application can be done either via a dedicated mobile app or online. If you choose the mobile app, it costs NZD 9, while the online application is NZD 12. Additionally, when applying for the NZETA, you are also required to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35. Once issued, the NZETA is valid for up to two years. Immigration authorities recommend allowing up to 72 hours for the processing of the NZETA application.

COVID – 19 – Related Requirements (As of Now)

Since September 13, 2022, when the COVID – 19 restrictions were lifted, there are no longer any requirements for travelers to be fully vaccinated to travel to New Zealand. This is great news for tourists who were previously concerned about vaccination status. Also, there are no requirements for presenting a negative COVID – 19 PCR test or antigen result upon entering New Zealand. Moreover, quarantine is not mandatory for visitors.

However, it’s important to note that although the New Zealand government has relaxed these requirements, some travel providers, such as airlines or cruise lines, might still have their own set of requirements for passengers. So, it’s advisable to check the website of your travel provider before booking your journey.

Upon arrival in New Zealand, eligible travelers will be given a pack of rapid antigen tests (RATs) with instructions at the airport. Travelers are encouraged to test on day 0/1 and 5/6, but this is more of a recommendation for personal health monitoring rather than a strict requirement.

Visa Application for Tourists

Visitor Visa (for Those Who Need It)

If you are not eligible for visa – free entry under the NZETA system, you may need to apply for a visitor visa. The visitor visa is available in both single – entry and multiple – entry options. This type of visa allows you to travel to New Zealand for tourism, visiting friends or relatives, short – term study, participating in sports events, or short – term business visits.

The application process for a visitor visa requires several documents. You need to provide a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity. Usually, you’ll also need to submit photos (recently taken, usually in a specific size and format). You may need to show evidence of your financial capacity, such as bank statements, to prove that you can afford your stay in New Zealand. If you’re traveling for business purposes, you’ll need to provide additional documents like an invitation letter from a New Zealand – based company or organization.

Special Considerations for Chinese Tourists

For Chinese tourists, the application process has its own nuances. You need to determine your travel purpose clearly. If it’s for tourism, you’ll need to provide a detailed travel itinerary, including hotel bookings, flight tickets, and planned activities during your stay. You may also need to show your family ties in China, such as family member ID cards and household registration books, to prove that you have strong ties to your home country and are likely to return after your visit.

What to Expect During Your Stay

Domestic Travel

From September 13, 2022, the New Zealand government has lifted most legal restrictions that would impact domestic travel. However, different transport providers, such as bus companies, airlines, or train services, may have their own COVID – 19 – related policies. So, before you start your domestic travels within New Zealand, it’s a good idea to check with your transport provider.

Mask – Wearing and Public Health Measures

New Zealand currently has minimal COVID – 19 requirements around mask – wearing. Mask usage is not required in public spaces and enclosed environments. Only those who test positive for COVID – 19 are required to isolate. You can stay updated on any local or national restrictions and health updates by checking the New Zealand Ministry of Health website.

Employment Restrictions for Tourists

New Zealand’s immigration rules are strict when it comes to employment. As a tourist, you are not allowed to work in New Zealand. If you plan to work or engage in any income – generating activities, you need to apply for the appropriate work visa.

Conclusion

In conclusion, tourists can now travel to New Zealand relatively easily. The removal of most COVID – 19 – related entry requirements, such as vaccination and testing, has made traveling more convenient. The NZETA system provides a simple way for many tourists to enter the country for up to 6 months. However, it’s crucial to carefully prepare all the necessary documents, whether it’s for the NZETA application or a visitor visa application if required. Always double – check the requirements of your travel providers and stay informed about any changes in New Zealand’s entry and domestic travel regulations. By doing so, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip to the beautiful country of New Zealand, where you can explore its stunning fjords, hike in its national parks, and experience its rich culture to the fullest.
