In financial mathematics, for instance, mathematicians use mathematical models to price financial derivatives, such as options and futures. This helps in managing financial risks in the banking and investment industries.

Biomathematics applies mathematical techniques to biological problems. It can be used to model the spread of diseases, understand population dynamics, and analyze biological data.

Humanities Subjects

History

Ancient History

Ancient history focuses on the study of civilizations that existed in the distant past, such as the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

By studying ancient history, we can learn about the development of early human societies, their political systems, religions, and cultural achievements. For example, the study of ancient Greek democracy provides insights into the origins of modern democratic systems.

Ancient historians also analyze archaeological evidence, such as artifacts and ruins, to piece together the lives of people who lived thousands of years ago.

Modern History

Modern history covers more recent events, typically from the 16th century onwards. It includes the study of major historical events like the Industrial Revolution, the World Wars, and the Cold War.

Understanding modern history helps us make sense of the current global political and economic landscape. For example, knowledge of the causes and consequences of the Cold War is essential for understanding international relations today.

Modern historians often use a variety of sources, including written documents, photographs, and oral histories, to reconstruct and analyze past events.

Literature

English Literature

English literature encompasses a wide range of written works in the English language, from the plays of William Shakespeare to modern novels.

Studying English literature allows us to explore different cultures, time periods, and human experiences. For example, the works of Jane Austen provide a window into the social and cultural norms of 19th – century England.

Literary analysis involves examining the themes, characters, and writing styles of literary works. This helps develop critical thinking and communication skills, which are valuable in many professions.

World Literature

World literature includes works from different cultures and languages around the world. It broadens our perspective and helps us understand the diversity of human thought and creativity.

For example, the works of Japanese author Haruki Murakami or the Nobel – laureate Gabriel García Márquez from Colombia introduce readers to unique cultural and narrative styles.
Studying world literature can also enhance cross – cultural understanding and empathy, which are important in an increasingly globalized world.

Philosophy

Ethics

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with moral principles and values. It explores questions such as what is right and wrong, and how we should live our lives.

In the field of medical ethics, for example, ethicists debate issues such as the morality of euthanasia, organ donation, and genetic engineering. These discussions are crucial for guiding medical professionals and policymakers.
