How Much Money Do You Need To Immigrate To Australia

Immigrating to Australia involves various costs that can vary significantly depending on the type of visa and individual circumstances. Here’s a detailed look at the financial aspects related to immigration.

Visa Application Fees

Skilled Migration Visas

For most skilled migration visas, there are substantial application fees. For example, the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program has fees that can range from around AUD 4,000 to AUD 5,000. This includes the cost of processing the application, which involves assessing an applicant’s skills, qualifications, and other eligibility criteria. The fee may seem high, but it covers the extensive background checks and verification processes that the Australian immigration department undertakes.

Additionally, if an applicant is applying with their family members, there are extra fees for each additional person. For instance, a spouse or partner may require an additional fee of around AUD 2,000, and children may have their own associated costs, usually lower than that of an adult. These additional fees are to account for the processing of their applications as well.

Family – Based Visas

Family – based visas also have significant costs. Partner visas, for example, can cost around AUD 7,000 to AUD 8,000. This includes both the initial application fee and any subsequent fees related to the processing stages. The higher cost for partner visas is due in part to the in – depth assessment of the relationship to ensure its genuineness.

Parent visas are even more expensive. The different types of parent visas can range from AUD 20,000 to AUD 50,000 or more, depending on the specific category. These fees are set to manage the demand for these visas and to cover the long – term potential impact on Australia’s social welfare system, as parents may require support in their old age.

Other Visa Types

Working Holiday Visas have relatively lower fees, usually around AUD 400 to AUD 500. These visas are designed for young people to have a short – term experience in Australia, and the lower fee reflects the simplicity of the application process compared to more permanent immigration visas.
Refugee and humanitarian visas generally do not have an application fee for the applicant, as these are based on Australia’s international obligations to provide protection to those in need.

Health and Character Checks

Health Examinations

All immigrants are required to undergo health examinations. The cost of these examinations can vary. On average, a basic health check for immigration purposes can cost around AUD 300 to AUD 500 per person. This may include tests for infectious diseases, general medical assessments, and specific tests depending on the applicant’s age, country of origin, and other factors.

In some cases, if additional specialized tests are required, such as for certain medical conditions or if the applicant has a history of specific health issues, the cost can increase significantly. For example, if an applicant has a potential heart condition, they may need to undergo more extensive cardiac tests, which could add several hundred dollars to the total cost.

Character Checks

Character checks involve providing police certificates from the applicant’s home country. The cost of obtaining these certificates varies from country to country. In some cases, it may be a nominal fee of around AUD 50 to AUD 100, but in others, it could be more expensive. Additionally, the Australian immigration department may conduct its own background checks, which are part of the overall processing cost included in the visa application fee.

Financial Capacity Requirements

Skilled Migrants

Skilled migrants are often required to show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves during the initial settlement period. This usually means having access to around AUD 20,000 to AUD 25,000 for a single applicant. The funds are to cover living expenses such as accommodation, food, and transportation while the applicant looks for employment in Australia. If the applicant has a family, the required amount increases. For example, a family of four may need around AUD 50,000 to AUD 60,000 to cover their initial living costs.

Some skilled migration visas may also require proof of employment sponsorship or a job offer, which can reduce the financial capacity requirement to some extent, but applicants still need to have some personal funds available.

Family – Based Immigrants

Family – based immigrants may have different financial requirements depending on the sponsoring family member’s situation. In general, they need to show that they will not be a burden on the Australian social welfare system. For partner visas, the couple may need to demonstrate combined financial resources to support themselves. For parent visas, the sponsoring child usually needs to meet certain income thresholds to show that they can support their parents during their stay in Australia.

English Language Testing and Qualification Assessment

English Language Tests

Most visa categories require proof of English language proficiency. Tests such as IELTS or PTE cost around AUD 300 to AUD 500 per attempt. Applicants may need to take these tests multiple times to achieve the required scores. For example, if an applicant needs an IELTS score of 7 in each band for a skilled migration visa and they don’t achieve it on the first try, they will have to pay for additional attempts.

Qualification Assessment

For skilled migration, having overseas qualifications assessed can also be costly. Different professional assessment bodies charge varying fees. For example, an engineering qualification assessment may cost around AUD 1,000 to AUD 1,500. This is to ensure that the applicant’s qualifications are equivalent to Australian standards and that they are eligible for employment in their field.

Conclusion

The amount of money needed to immigrate to Australia can vary greatly. Visa application fees, health and character checks, financial capacity requirements, and costs related to English language testing and qualification assessment all contribute to the overall cost. For some visas, the total cost can be relatively low, such as for Working Holiday Visas, but for more permanent immigration options like family – based or skilled migration visas, the costs can be substantial, often running into tens of thousands of dollars. Prospective immigrants need to carefully consider these financial aspects and plan accordingly to ensure a smooth immigration process. It’s also important to note that these costs may change over time, so staying updated with the latest immigration fee schedules and requirements is crucial.
