Survey Shows 57% Of State Board Students Opting For International Education

According to the recent “Application-based Survey 2024” conducted by LeapScholar, a leading platform for overseas education, a significant 57% of students from Indian state boards are pursuing international education. This trend reflects a remarkable shift in attitudes, breaking away from traditional norms and showcasing a diverse demographic eager to explore global educational opportunities.

Challenging Conventional Beliefs

Historically, it was believed that students from international and ICSE/CBSE boards had a greater inclination towards studying abroad due to their perceived exposure and aspirations. However, the findings from the LeapScholar survey suggest that this is no longer the case. Students from local state boards are equally enthusiastic about pursuing their educational dreams on a global scale. This change signifies a broadening of perspectives, with aspirations for international study extending beyond conventional educational backgrounds and ethnicities.

Empowerment of Female Students

The survey also highlights a noteworthy trend regarding gender representation in the pursuit of international education. Females account for 34% of the respondents, indicating a significant presence of women embracing opportunities for global learning. This surge in female participation underscores a broader cultural shift in India, where women are breaking stereotypes and actively seeking higher education and career advancements overseas.

Evolving Destination Preferences

As Indian students’ ambitions grow, so do their preferences for study destinations. While Canada, the UK, and the US remain perennial favorites, students are increasingly looking beyond these traditional choices. Emerging destinations such as Japan and the Netherlands are gaining traction, reflecting a desire for diverse cultural experiences and unique educational opportunities. This shift demonstrates students’ willingness to explore unconventional pathways and engage with global communities.

Diverse Academic Interests

The survey further reveals a diversification in students’ choice of academic subjects. While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses have long been popular, they are no longer the sole focus for students pursuing international education. The findings indicate that Indian students are now exploring a wide range of disciplines, including Psychology, Law, Sports Sciences, Architecture, Performing Arts, and Social Sciences. This trend reflects a desire for a more well-rounded and enriched educational experience that extends beyond traditional career-oriented fields.

Commentary from LeapScholar

Arnav Kumar, co-founder of LeapScholar, expressed optimism regarding the survey’s findings, stating, “This survey is a clear indication that Indian students are becoming more ambitious and forward-thinking in their approach to seeking the best educational opportunities. We are inspired by the growing aspirations of students, particularly those from state boards, who are considering studying abroad like never before. It is encouraging to see female students leading this charge.” Kumar emphasized that this shift not only reflects increasing accessibility to international education but also signifies a changing mindset among Indian students. They are now more open to exploring unconventional ways of learning and expanding their horizons.

Influence of Digital Penetration

The surge in aspirations among state board students can be attributed to several factors, particularly the rapid digital penetration across India. Increased access to information and a growing awareness of international study opportunities have empowered students to consider studying abroad. The availability of online resources and educational platforms has democratized access to information, allowing students to explore various international education options more easily. This digital transformation is reshaping the educational landscape, making global education more accessible than ever before.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the findings from the “Application-based Survey 2024” underscore a transformative shift in the mindset of Indian students, particularly those from state boards. With a significant percentage now pursuing international education, there is clear evidence of a more diverse and inclusive demographic engaging with global learning opportunities. The rise of female participation and the exploration of unconventional study destinations and subjects reflect a broader cultural change in India.

As aspirations continue to rise, it is essential for educational institutions and policymakers to support these students in their journeys. By fostering an environment that encourages ambition and exploration, India can continue to produce a generation of globally-minded individuals ready to contribute to an interconnected world. The future looks bright for Indian students seeking education abroad, as they increasingly challenge norms and embrace opportunities for growth and learning on a global scale.
