How To Apply For The RRV Visa In Australia

The Resident Return Visa (RRV) is essential for permanent residents of Australia who wish to travel outside the country and return. This visa allows you to maintain your status as a permanent resident. If you are planning to apply for an RRV, this article will guide you through the process step by step.

What is the RRV Visa?

The Resident Return Visa (subclass 155 and subclass 157) is designed for former permanent residents and certain individuals who hold a permanent visa. It allows you to re-enter Australia after traveling abroad.

The RRV is crucial for those who have spent time outside Australia but want to return to their home country. It also serves individuals who have not yet lived in Australia for a significant time but wish to maintain their permanent residency.

Types of RRV

Subclass 155: This is the most common form of RRV. It allows you to travel freely in and out of Australia for up to five years.

Subclass 157: This type is for individuals who have not been able to live in Australia long enough to apply for the subclass 155 visa. It is valid for a shorter period, typically three months.

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the RRV, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. Here are the main requirements:

Permanent Resident Status: You must hold a valid Australian permanent visa.

Travel Requirement: You should be outside Australia or within Australia when applying.

Residence Requirement: For subclass 155, you generally need to have spent at least two years in Australia as a permanent resident in the last five years. However, if you have compelling reasons, you may still qualify.

Character Requirement: You must be of good character and not have any criminal convictions that would affect your application.

Genuine Intention: You need to demonstrate your intention to maintain your connection to Australia.

Preparing Your Application

Before you start your application, gather all necessary documents. A well-prepared application can streamline the process. Here’s what you need:

1. Identification Documents

Passport: A valid passport is essential. Ensure that it is not expired and has blank pages for entry stamps.

Permanent Visa: Include a copy of your permanent visa grant letter.

2. Evidence of Residence

Proof of Residence: Gather documents that show your time spent in Australia, such as utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements.

Supporting Letters: Consider including letters from employers or community organizations that demonstrate your ties to Australia.

3. Character Documents

Police Clearance: You may need to submit a police clearance certificate from any country you have lived in for more than 12 months since turning 16.

4. Additional Documents

Travel Itinerary: If you have future travel plans, include your travel itinerary.

Compelling Reasons: If you are applying under special circumstances, prepare documentation to support your case.

Application Process

Now that you have gathered all necessary documents, you can start the application process. Here’s how to do it:

1. Online Application

Create an ImmiAccount: To apply for the RRV, create an account on the Department of Home Affairs website. This account will allow you to manage your application online.

Complete the Application Form: Fill out the relevant application form (Form 1005 for subclass 155 or Form 1006 for subclass 157) accurately. Make sure to double-check your answers.

2. Upload Documents

Attach Supporting Documents: Use your ImmiAccount to upload all required documents. Ensure that they are clear and legible.

3. Pay Application Fee

Fee Payment: The application fee varies depending on the visa subclass. Check the current fee on the Department of Home Affairs website and pay through your ImmiAccount.

4. Submit Your Application

Review and Submit: Before submitting, review your application to ensure all information is accurate. Once satisfied, submit your application through the portal.

After Submission

Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation. Keep this for your records. Here are the next steps:

1. Application Processing

Processing Time: The processing time for the RRV can vary. It may take several weeks to a few months, depending on individual circumstances.

Check Application Status: You can check the status of your application through your ImmiAccount.

2. Further Information Requests

Additional Documents: Sometimes, the Department of Home Affairs may request more documents. Respond promptly to any requests to avoid delays.

3. Decision Notification

Receive Your Decision: Once a decision is made, you will receive a notification. If approved, your RRV will be attached to your passport electronically.

If Denied: If your application is denied, you will receive reasons for the refusal. You can consider reapplying or appealing the decision based on the provided reasons.

Traveling with an RRV

Once you receive your RRV, you can travel in and out of Australia as needed. However, here are some important points to keep in mind:

1. Validity Period

Subclass 155: This visa is generally valid for five years. You can enter and exit Australia as many times as you wish during this period.

Subclass 157: This visa usually allows for a single entry into Australia for three months.

2. Maintaining Permanent Residency

Residence Requirement: To retain your permanent residency status, make sure to comply with residency requirements.

Renewing Your RRV: If you plan to stay outside Australia for an extended period, consider applying for a new RRV before your current one expires.

Applying for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) is an important step for maintaining your permanent residency in Australia. Understanding the eligibility criteria, preparing the necessary documents, and following the application process can help you successfully secure your visa.

If you plan to travel abroad and return to Australia, take the time to prepare your application carefully. Staying informed about the requirements and procedures will ensure a smoother process.

With proper planning and attention to detail, you can continue your journey in Australia without interruption. Whether for work, study, or simply to visit friends and family, your RRV will help you maintain your ties to Australia.
