Republican Party’s 2024 Platform on Immigration: A Return to Trump-Era Policies

July 9, 2024 – The Republican National Committee has unveiled its 2024 platform, echoing former President Donald Trump’s robust stance on immigration, emphasizing border closure and expansive deportation measures.

Led by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), President Donald Trump, and Senator David Perdue (R-GA), the platform outlines 20 promises, prominently featuring immigration as a top priority. Topping the list is “SEAL THE BORDER, AND STOP THE MIGRANT INVASION,” followed closely by “CARRY OUT THE LARGEST DEPORTATION OPERATION IN AMERICAN HISTORY.” This platform, the party’s first since 2016, delineates a comprehensive immigration policy agenda:

Republicans advocate for a stringent approach to halt what they term as “open-border policies,” pledging to end the perceived invasion at the Southern border. This includes reinstating Trump-era border strategies, completing the border wall, deploying advanced surveillance technology, and deploying military personnel. Additionally, they propose a U.S. Navy-led “full Fentanyl Blockade” to combat drug trafficking.

The platform vows to bolster Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), impose harsher penalties for illegal entry and visa overstays, and revive the “Remain in Mexico” policy. It also suggests utilizing the Alien Enemies Act to expel gang members, drug traffickers, and cartel affiliates. Measures include reinstating the travel ban and leveraging Title 42 to counter child trafficking.

Republicans pledge to reverse what they label as the Democrats’ “Open Borders Policies” by executing the most extensive deportation effort in U.S. history, focusing on undocumented immigrants who have violated American laws.

Rigorous Vetting Process: Emphasizing national security, the party proposes utilizing federal statutes to block entry for individuals deemed antagonistic to American values, such as “Christian-hating Communists, Marxists, and Socialists.” They advocate for extreme vetting protocols to exclude jihadists and their supporters.

The platform demands cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. It mandates local authorities to surrender undocumented immigrants to ICE.

Republicans endorse prioritizing what they term as merit-based immigration, advocating for the cessation of chain migration processes that enable immigrants to sponsor family members’ immigration. The party emphasizes prioritizing American workers in the immigration process.

These policy points underscore a continuation of the stringent immigration policies synonymous with the Trump administration, prioritizing enforcement and border security over pathways to citizenship and comprehensive immigration reform.

The Republican Party’s platform sets a stark contrast to opposing views on immigration policy, framing the issue as a critical battleground in the upcoming electoral landscape.
