In a move aimed at enhancing travel convenience, China’s Exit and Entry Administration announced the introduction of a new travel permit for non-Chinese residents of Hong Kong and Macau. Effective July 10, the Mainland travel permit is designed to streamline entry procedures for residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Macau SAR wishing to visit mainland China.
Administration, non-Chinese permanent residents of Hong Kong and Macau can apply for this special permit through China Travel Service Holdings in their respective regions. The permit is valid for five years, allowing multiple entries into China for stays not exceeding 90 days per visit.
Should a traveler require an extension beyond 90 days due to unforeseen circumstances, they may apply for an extension of up to another 90 days through local Chinese authorities.
The new travel permit also enables holders to utilize an e-channel service upon entry into China, utilizing a system introduced by Hong Kong to expedite border control procedures. This service is part of the Ministry of Public Security’s initiative to streamline entry for foreigners, including residents of Hong Kong and Macau.
While the permit facilitates short-term visits for purposes such as business, tourism, seminars, or personal visits, holders are prohibited from engaging in work, study, or news coverage activities within China. Additionally, holders are required to register with local authorities during their stay.
China’s National Immigration Administration emphasized that the introduction of the travel permit aims to foster closer exchanges between mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The initiative is part of broader efforts to integrate Hong Kong and Macau into China’s national development strategy, particularly focusing on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to improving immigration management services to support regional development and enhance integration efforts.
This new measure underscores China’s commitment to facilitating cross-border travel while maintaining regulatory oversight and supporting regional integration initiatives.
