What should I do if I lose my American passport

What should I do if I lose my American passport

Passport is not only a necessary certificate for entry and exit, but also the only valid certificate that can prove nationality and identity in other countries after exit. It is difficult to lose it during travel or study.

What should I do if I lose my passport while studying in the United States?

Check it out here.

There are two kinds of reasons why a passport is lost. One is lost, the other is lost.

If it is stolen, you need to bring your other valid identification (such as student card, driver’s license, etc.) to the Police station to file a case and get a Police Report.

If it is just a simple loss, you can directly go to the embassy in the United States to replace it, without the need for a Police Report.

There are two ways to reapply for a lost passport. The first way is to apply for a new passport directly from the Chinese Embassy in the United States in the area where you are located. The second way is to apply for a travel permit first and then apply for a new passport at the Exit and Entry Administration department of the public security bureau where you are registered after you return to China.

According to the official website of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, “ordinary passports held by Chinese citizens can be reissued if their normal use is affected by loss, theft or damage.”

The travel permit is for “Chinese citizens who are anxious to return to the United States after their temporary passports have been lost, stolen, damaged or expired.”

Which way to choose depends on how long you need your passport. The first way seems more simple, but it takes at least 15 working days, while the second way only takes 4 working days (it can be accelerated to 1-3 days). Students who return to China within 30 days are strongly recommended to choose the latter.

No matter which method you choose to apply for a new passport, you need to make an appointment on the overseas passport booking website for Chinese citizens in advance and submit the application by yourself at the agreed time. The application cannot be mailed or entrusted to others.

It is worth reminding that once the application for a replacement passport is submitted, the original passport is declared invalid, and even if it is found later, it can no longer be used and has to be sent to the embassy for cancellation.

(1) Successfully book and print out the Passport/Travel Permit Application Form of the People’s Republic of China through the Booking website for Overseas Passport Application for Chinese Citizens;

(2) Three full-face bareheaded color half-length ID photos within half a year.

(3) A copy of the original passport or other documents to prove the applicant’s Chinese nationality and identity (such as household register, ID card or birth notarization, etc.);

(4) Personal information (including: personal profile, experience in the United States, identity in the United States, place and process of passport loss, theft or damage, passport issuing authority, issuing time, passport number and validity period, home address and contact information);

(5.) Fill in the statement: “I have been informed and confirmed that even if the lost passport is recovered, it cannot be used again, and the application for replacement cannot be revoked, and I will bear the legal responsibility caused by this.”

If the passport is damaged, the damaged passport must be returned.

In addition, original and photocopies of proof of residence status in the United States (such as green card, work and study visa or Form I-797, I-20, 2019, etc.) are required to apply for a replacement passport, as well as a declaration of nationality status signed at the application site.

4. The process of reapplying for visas will be over when you get a new passport. However, students will still have to apply for visas later.

Unfortunately, a lost or stolen US visa cannot be replaced in the US. It must be handled in person at the US embassy or consulate, so you need to apply for it after you return to China.

The procedure is basically the same as applying for a new visa, except that after filling out the DS160 form to make an appointment, you need to call the visa center to inform you that your passport has been lost and declare it.

Next, I will make a visa appointment to complete the in-person visa process, but I do not need to pay the visa fee twice this time.

1. Passport handling fee for the first time: 200 yuan/copy.

2. Once valid endorsement of passport: 20 yuan/copy.

3. Second valid endorsement of passport: 40 yuan/copy.

4, passport multiple endorsement: (1) short-term (no more than one year) multiple valid endorsement 100 yuan/copy.

(2) Long-term (three years) multiple valid endorsement 300 yuan/copy.

5, passport renewal: 220 yuan/copy (including renewal fee).

6. Passport stolen or damaged: 220 yuan/copy (including the replenishment fee).

7. Lost passport reissue: 420 yuan/copy (including reissue fee).

8. Additional notes for passport: 20 yuan/copy.

9. Other fees: 50 yuan for photo taking, 20 yuan for express delivery.

In a word, the process of reissuing passports is very complicated. I remind you to take good care of your passports and other important documents.

Of course, if it is really lost accidentally, do not be too alarmed, according to the above process step by step, I believe that it will be able to properly solve this problem.

Finally, I wish the international students a smooth life and never need to worry about losing their documents!
