ADRIAN — Siena Heights University (SHU) is launching a transformative scholarship initiative, the Brain Gain Promise, aimed at combating “brain drain” in Michigan by incentivizing local students to pursue higher education within the state. This scholarship aims to encourage Lenawee County residents to obtain college degrees and contribute to Michigan’s workforce, according to a recent news release.
To qualify for the Brain Gain Promise scholarship, students must either be residents of Lenawee County or graduates from a Lenawee County high school. Full tuition discounts will be provided for students with a total household income below $65,000, encompassing all federal and state eligibility criteria. Those with a household income below $80,000 will benefit from reduced tuition, paying less than $10,000 annually, inclusive of federal and state eligibility. Additionally, Lenawee County graduates must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by May 1 and maintain full-time enrollment during both fall and winter semesters.
SHU President Douglas Palmer emphasized the importance of accessibility and choice in the Brain Gain initiative, stating, “Students should have the opportunity to choose the school that is right for them, regardless of their financial background.” Palmer added, “With greater access to educational facilities, resources, and funding through opportunities like our Brain Gain Promise, students are more likely to stay in-state and help Michigan flourish.”
By expanding Lenawee County students’ access to higher education, the scholarship aims to foster connections and opportunities through internships, experiential learning, and community service within their local communities.
The university also envisions that the Brain Gain Promise will enhance the bond between graduates and their communities, aligning with SHU’s mission of “assisting people to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical through a teaching and learning environment which respects the dignity of all.” This initiative reflects SHU’s commitment to empowering local talent and contributing to the educational and economic vitality of Michigan.
