7 Key Requirements to Become a US Citizen

Introduction to the types and procedures of investment immigration applications in New Zealand in 2021

Becoming a United States citizen is a dream for many immigrants. It offers numerous benefits, including the right to vote, access to government services, and the ability to sponsor family members for immigration. However, to achieve this dream, there are certain requirements that must be met. In this article, we will explore the key criteria and steps involved in becoming a US citizen.

Eligibility for Naturalization

To be eligible for naturalization, the process of becoming a US citizen, an individual must meet specific requirements set by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). These requirements typically include:

  • Age Requirement

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of filing the naturalization application.

  • Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) Status

Generally, individuals must be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a specified period of time before applying for naturalization. The usual requirement is five years of continuous residence. However, for spouses of US citizens, the requirement is reduced to three years if they meet certain criteria.

  • Continuous Residence

Applicants must have resided continuously within the United States for a specific period of time without any long absences. They should demonstrate a commitment to the country and its values.

  • Physical Presence

Prospective citizens must also meet a physical presence requirement, which refers to the amount of time an individual has been physically present in the US. Generally, applicants must have spent at least half of the required continuous residence period physically present in the country.

  • Good Moral Character

Demonstrating good moral character is an essential requirement for naturalization. This means having a clean criminal record, being honest in dealings with the government, and exhibiting positive moral values.

  • Language Proficiency

Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak basic English. They will need to pass an English language test conducted during the naturalization interview. However, certain exemptions or accommodations may apply for individuals with disabilities or those who are elderly.

  • Knowledge of US Civics

Prospective citizens are required to have knowledge of US history and government. This includes understanding fundamental principles, such as the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the responsibilities of citizens. An exam assessing this knowledge is administered during the naturalization interview.

The Naturalization Process

Once an individual meets the eligibility requirements, they can begin the naturalization process. This involves the following steps:

  • Filing the Application

The first step is to file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with the USCIS. Along with the application, supporting documents, such as proof of identity, residence, and marital status, must be submitted. Additionally, the required filing fee must be paid.

  • Biometrics Appointment

After the application is filed, the applicant will receive a notice for a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, fingerprints, photographs, and other biometric information will be collected.

  • Interview and Exam

Upon completion of the biometrics process, the applicant will be scheduled for an interview with a USCIS officer. During the interview, the officer will review the application and test the applicant’s knowledge of English and civics. If successful, the officer will grant approval for naturalization.

  • Oath of Allegiance

Following the interview, the final step in the naturalization process is attending the Oath of Allegiance ceremony. Here, applicants take an oath renouncing allegiance to their former country and pledging loyalty to the United States. After taking the oath, they receive their Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming US citizens.

Exceptions and Accommodations

While the requirements mentioned above are standard, there are certain exceptions and accommodations available for specific individuals:

  • Military Service: Members of the US armed forces, as well as certain veterans and their spouses, may qualify for expedited naturalization under special provisions.
  • Disability Waivers: Individuals with physical or developmental disabilities may be eligible for accommodations or waivers for certain requirements, such as the English language and civics exams.
  • Children: Children born outside the United States to US citizen parents may acquire citizenship through their parents’ naturalization or by other means, even if they do not meet the usual requirements.

Conclusion

Becoming a US citizen is a significant milestone that requires meeting specific requirements and following a structured process. From meeting the age and residency criteria to demonstrating good moral character, language proficiency, and knowledge of US civics, applicants must fulfill numerous obligations. By understanding these requirements and following the naturalization process, individuals can realize their dream of becoming US citizens and enjoy the rights and privileges that come with it.
