How Do You Become a US Citizen Through Naturalization?

What is the real life of a New Zealand migrant

For individuals seeking to become U.S. citizens through naturalization, the process involves meeting certain eligibility criteria, submitting an application, and undergoing examinations. This comprehensive guide outlines the key steps and considerations to successfully navigate the path to U.S. citizenship.

Determine Your Eligibility

Permanent Resident Status: To be eligible for naturalization, you must be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a specified period, usually five years. For spouses of U.S. citizens, the requirement is typically three years.

Continuous Residence: Maintain continuous residence in the United States during the required period. Extended absences may affect eligibility.

Physical Presence: Demonstrate physical presence in the U.S. for a certain number of days during the required period. The specific duration depends on the eligibility category.

Good Moral Character: Maintain good moral character throughout the eligibility period. Criminal offenses, tax evasion, and certain other actions may impact eligibility.

Prepare Required Documents

Form N-400: Complete and submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. This form collects personal information, employment history, and details about your time as a permanent resident.

Supporting Documents: Gather necessary supporting documents, including a copy of your green card, proof of continuous residence, and evidence of eligibility based on marriage (if applicable). Follow the guidance provided in the form instructions.

Submit Your Application

Filing Fee: Pay the required filing fee for Form N-400. Fee waivers may be available for certain applicants based on income.

Submission Method: Submit your application by mail to the designated address provided in the form instructions. Include all required documents and fees.

Biometrics Appointment

Biometric Services: Attend a biometrics appointment after receiving a notice from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This involves providing fingerprints, a photograph, and a signature.
Interview and Naturalization Test

Interview Notice: If your application is complete and meets the necessary requirements, you will receive a notice for an interview.

Civics and English Test: Prepare for the naturalization interview, which includes an English language proficiency test and a civics test. The civics test assesses your knowledge of U.S. history and government.

Exemptions: Some applicants may be exempt from the English language requirement or the civics test based on age and years of permanent residency. Check eligibility criteria for exemptions.

Interview and Decision

Interview Process: Attend the naturalization interview with a USCIS officer. Answer questions about your application and background. The officer will also assess your English language skills and civics knowledge.

Decision Notification: Following the interview, you will receive a decision on your application. If approved, you may receive a notice to attend a naturalization ceremony.

Take the Oath of Allegiance

Naturalization Ceremony: Attend a naturalization ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. This oath signifies your commitment to uphold and defend the Constitution and laws of the U.S.

Receive Certificate of Naturalization: After taking the oath, you will receive the Certificate of Naturalization, officially conferring U.S. citizenship.

Update Social Security and Other Records

Update Social Security Records: Once naturalized, update your Social Security records to reflect your new citizenship status.

Other Agencies: Notify other relevant agencies and institutions of your change in citizenship status as needed.

Exercise Your Rights and Responsibilities as a U.S. Citizen

Voting: Enjoy the right to vote in U.S. elections upon becoming a citizen.

Participate in Civic Life: Engage in civic activities and contribute to your community as a proud U.S. citizen.

Passport Application: Consider applying for a U.S. passport to facilitate international travel.

Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization is a significant and rewarding process. By carefully following these steps, meeting eligibility requirements, and preparing for the required tests and interviews, you can achieve your goal of U.S. citizenship and fully participate in the rights and responsibilities of being an American citizen.
